Going Beyond Fear in Addressing Attorney Mental Health

Going Beyond Fear in Addressing Attorney Mental Health

Going Beyond Fear in Addressing Attorney Mental Health culminates a year-long effort to change the well-intentioned (and partially successful) “one size fits all” approach that the legal profession has taken to address mental health issues.  The article urges three things: (a) focusing on things we can change as opposed to things we cannot; (b) drawing lines between appropriate and inappropriate areas of institutional involvement; and (c) distinguishing between the 80 percent of population who do not have potential mental illness issues and the 20 percent who do.  The most novel or even controversial sections of the article reject current conventional wisdom on suicide and depression statistics in the profession.  It is the only article on David Foster Wallace, Pete Davidson, Bill James, the Book of Exodus, a Rolling Stone review of a Supertramp Album, and a Petula Clark song that is not “Downtown.”

The Use of AI in the Legal Profession

Large language models, or “LLMs,” are nothing new. For years, legal professionals have been using this type of AI to find cases and locate documents that traditional keyword and Boolean searches miss. But recent advancements in this LLM technology known as generative pre-trained transformers, or “GPTs,” have improved these already-powerful tools. And the secret is out. There are countless bots and other applications available for various general and specific uses, including for the practice of law. This CLE presentation introduces today’s new AI technology, and specifically explains its usefulness for the practice of law.

This presentation is intended for licensed and unlicensed legal professionals and covers the following:

  1. Provide a short review of prior LLM AI technology

  2. Explain why GPT AI is different and more powerful

  3. Distinguish different kinds of AI available today

  4. Demonstrate real, trustworthy use cases, like legal research, reviewing documents, analyzing contracts, and more

Join us on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, at 1:00 PM EST to learn how AI and ChatGPT can revolutionize the way you work in the legal field.

Lawyers work with people all the time, whether they are their clients, opposing counsel, colleagues, or staff. In order to be an effective legal practitioner as well as an effective manager of the practice of law, every lawyer needs to understand the pivotal importance of empathy in the practice of law. Empathy is the ability to sense other people’s emotions, and to imagine what they might be thinking or feeling. Empathy is a key component of emotional intelligence, which is a core competency of any highly effective lawyer, legal professional, or law firm leader. Research indicates a positive correlation between empathy and operational performance, team climate, and employee retention. Law firms that embrace a culture of empathy toward their clients as well as their internal teams will have a competitive advantage in the legal marketplace.

Blazing Trails: The Future of Cannabis in a Changing Legal Landscape

Blazing Trails: The Future of Cannabis in a Changing Legal Landscape

The laws, regulations and public attitudes on cannabis are changing so rapidly it’s hard to keep up.

Consider: in 2021, a sweeping draft bill titled the ‘‘Cannabis Administration and Opportunity Act” was introduced in the US Senate. For the first time in history, leaders in the Senate have proposed legislation to decriminalize marijuana at the federal level and effectively end federal prohibition. The bill would, among other things, remove cannabis from the federal list of controlled substances, impact a range of federal agencies from the National Forest Service to the Federal Aviation Authority, and provide for expungement of certain marijuana offenses.

Although the ultimate fate of the bill is unclear, its mere existence marks a sea change in cannabis law.

For lawyers, this poses a number of challenges:

  1. Understanding the laws of their state – which may differ significantly from those of neighboring states – in order to represent their clients competently.

  2. Understanding the interplay between federal laws and those in their respective states.

  3. Navigating the emerging ethical considerations of cannabis law.

  4. Assessing the risks and opportunities for their own law practice.

  5. Keeping up with changes in the law, which is evolving at light speed.

Cannabis issues touch on every area of legal practice, from criminal defense to zoning law. Having at least a basic grasp of the key issues is essential.
